Reaching an agreement

You can either agree on money between yourselves, or ask the court to decide. But before you start talking about money with the other parent, you may want advice from a solicitor on what could happen if you take your case to court.

Agreeing between yourselves

Agreeing about money, property and debt without going to court is usually the fastest and cheapest way. Some people get legal advice from a solicitor and then ask a mediator to sort out their differences. A solicitor can make the agreements legally binding, and if you are on a low income you may get help with costs.

Using the courts

If you can’t reach an agreement using a mediator or solicitors, you may have to go to court to have a judge decide how your finances are to be shared. See our legal rights and responsibilities section for more information.
