Housing rights and options

Making housing arrangements for you and your child can be stressful and the law on housing rights can be complicated. But sorting out your housing situation will allow you to get on with your life and focus on the wellbeing of your child.

Once you have a secure base you may find it easier to put in place a child maintenance arrangement to provide for your child's needs. It may also become easier to arrange contact with your child and residence for your child.

If you are separating or divorcing from the other parent, you'll want to know what the legal situation is with the home, and how you may divide the property between you. If you're living apart from the other parent, understanding your housing options will help you to arrange housing for you and your child.

Download our Housing rights and options [PDF 537KB] PDF leaflet to find out how the law may affect renting a home or owning a home. You can also learn about the different kinds of housing schemes available, where you may get help with housing costs and steps to take if you think you may become homeless.

It can be hard sometimes to make choices for you and your child, and to know where you can go for advice on what to do. But understanding your housing options and rights will help you plan for the future with more confidence and focus on your child's needs.
